Surviving Summer as a new dad
Summer is the greatest time of the year, in Sweden’s case, its the best week of the year… Especially if you have endured the heartless winter months, but now you have a baby, and that means summer will be spent slightly differently to years gone past. You can no longer spend hours on end sun baking on the sand, nor can you get hammered on a boat with your fishing buddies on a Tuesday morning. However, summer with baby is more enjoyable than any of that ever was. And here is how you can make every moment count.
Get a sun tent
Getting a UV protected sun tent is so important if you wanted to spend any extended time out in the sun with baby bub. Just make sure you are buying a certified UV protected tent and not simply a shadow cover (you may just bake your baby, otherwise). Bonus tip, get a portable fan, they are relatively inexpensive and they can be a life saver in the sun.
Slip, Slop, Slap
You will want to be getting SPF 50 for bubs. It should be applied 30 minutes before sun contact so that the lotion has time to fully soak in and absorb. Please note that reapplication is just as important as the initial application. Reapply in two hour intervals to ensure the best protection.
Splash the day away
In conjunction with the top two points, splashing away in a body of water is a dream come true for a baby bub. There are just a few things to keep in mind. Try to restrict the mass population from mauling your child and keep the activity to small venues with low people intact. This will calm your child and limit the visual intakes. Secondly, keep the head above water, for now. That time will come, just take it easy for now. Lastly, take it slow and let your bub splash away without you wanting her to do laps straight away.
Don’t stay in doors all summer, it is great for your young one to see the world in all its warming glory. The flowers are brighter, the air is thicker and the emotion around town is magnificent. Allow your baby to experience all of this by going for long walks, light adventures and meeting new and exciting people. Plus it will allow you to take many great photos for your memory sack.
Hydration is key, duh! But sometimes it is easy for parents to forget about themselves in the hoopla of running around with bub. Stay fresh and filled with H2O and you will be powering for another adventure in no time.
Be aware of over heating
Babies overheat, easily. If they are laying in prams make sure they are getting ample ventilation or invest in a portable fan to help cool them down. If they are in a carrier, try to make sure their neck and face have good access to airflow, and probably worth taking those socks off too.
Clean baby equals a happy baby
Sweat breeds bacteria so it is important that you are washing your child before bedtime. This seems simple to remember but make sure you are getting inside all the chubby rolls and the neck and genitals. You do not want random rashes springing up because of a day in the sun.
Fresh fruit in the sun, what could be better! Get yourself a fruit sucker and add that to the freezer for a few hours and you have yourself an ice pop fit for a baby king.
Good? or Good?
